WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BULLYING AND HOW CAN WE STAND TOGETHER TO END IT?

What is BULLYING?

It is bullying if:

  • One person is hurting or harming another with words or behavior.
  • It is being done intentionally.
  • The person being hurt has a hard time defending themselves from the behavior.
  • The kids who are doing it have more power.

Bullying can be physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, and cyber/electronic.

Each day 160,000 students in the U.S. stay home for fear of being bullied.  That means that those students lose the opportunity to learn.  It is every student’s right to feel safe and be safe in school.

Students who bully can be any size, age, grade, race, or gender.

Bullying can happen to anyone.  Bullying is about someone’s behavior.  That behavior could be directed at the shy quiet student, or the class athlete.  Girls bully, boys bully, elementary, middle, and high school kids bully-there is no one characteristic or aspect that indicates who gets bullied.  The one sure thing is that no one ever deserves to be bullied, and if someone is being bullied, they have a right to be safe!

Silence is no longer an acceptable response to bullying.  Adults, students, and educators can no longer look away when they see bullying.  Ignoring it won’t work. Everyone needs to be empowered with options to respond.

We can ALL take a stand!

Students can be especially effective in bullying intervention. More than 55 percent of bullying situations will stop when a peer intervenes. Student education of how to address bullying for peers is critical, as is the support of adults.

Join the students in Middlesex County as they stand up to bullying!

October 19, 2016:  Unity Day

Unite together and support students being bullied everywhere.  Show them that they are not alone – that someone cares by wearing orange.

January 16-20, 2017:  No Name Calling Week

This is an annual week of educational activities aimed at ending name calling of all kinds and providing students with the tools and inspiration with ways to eliminate bullying in their schools and communities.

Be and agent of change!  Thank you to the Community Foundation of Middlesex County Council of Business Partners as they also take a stand to unite against bullying.
