Better CT features a segment on bully-free communities

Community Foundation of Middlesex County President & CEO Cynthia H. Clegg joined CFMC Council of Business Partners chair David Director and Campaign for Bully-free Communities spokesperson Donny Marshall on Better CT to discuss how – TOGETHER – our community can make change and ensure  our youth have a positive, bully-free community.

CFMC would like to acknowledge and thank Scot Haney, Kara Sundlun, and Better CT guest Dr. Patty Ann Tublin for Standing Together for Change and taking the Bully-free Communities Pledge.

The following efforts are now being planned for an October kickoff to coincide with National Bullying Prevention Month and National Unity Day on October 22.

October 22 from 9 – 11 am at EMPOWER Leadership and Adventure Center in Middletown

• All in Middlesex County are invited to attend.
• One bus will be provided for each school district for transportation of students, educators, town officials, business and civic leaders.
• These community representatives will participate in the rally event and then “bring it back” to their community with schools being asked to hold their own rally.
• Each community will participate as a team in “empowering” activities.
• Rally speakers will include representatives from CFMC, Council of Business Partners, Connecticut Association of Schools and Donny Marshall.
• Rally participants will take the pledge together.

Highlights include: Upcoming rally October 22, 2014, in Middletown, Conn., coinciding with National Anti-bullying Month and Unity Day.

Working to prevent bullying, a group of Middlesex County business leaders and the Community Foundation of Middlesex County (CFMC) announce the Campaign for Bully-Free Communities.

Aiming to highlight the No Bully Zone Program underwritten by the Council of Business Partners Fund created through CFMC, the campaign will rally Middlesex County individuals, businesses, municipalities, school districts, libraries and other community organizations to “stand together” for a Bully-Free community.

“Bullying has destructive consequences on our young people, and it is something we don’t have to accept. It is a social behavior we’d like to see change,” said Dave Director, Council of Business Partners Chair and CFMC Board member. He also is President/owner of Connecticut Lighting Centers of Hartford and Southington.

“Our feeling [as business owners] is these kids are our future employees, and we need to do what we can to provide them with the necessary tools to be successful in society and to feel good about themselves,” Director said. “We’ve initiated a program that will truly make a difference in their lives, and in all of our lives, too.”
